On Tuesday 27 January 2026 student groups held a protest outside the University Grants Commission headquarters in New Delhi. They were really against the University Grants Commissions Equity Regulations, 2026. This protest was part of a problem all over the country. Many people are upset with the University Grants Commissions rules, for higher education.
The protest was mostly led by students from caste communities. These students think that the new rules, which are called the Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026 might actually cause problems and unfair treatment on campuses of making things fair. The students who were protesting said that the new rules could lead to reverse discrimination and a lot of trouble in colleges and universities. The students are worried that the Promotion of Equity, in Higher Education Institutions Regulations 2026 will not help to make college and university environments better.
The people who organised the protest said that the protest on Tuesday was a protest where they surrounded the UGC building. They wanted students from all the universities and colleges in Delhi to join them. They asked people to join on media and a lot of people saw it. Some people even made slogans like “No to UGC discrimination”. These were all, over the internet.
The problem started when the University Grants Commission made a decision on 13 January 2026. They wanted to bring in the Equity Regulations. These rules say that colleges and universities have to set up committees and helplines. They also need to keep an eye on things to deal with complaints. Especially when people say they are being treated unfairly because of their caste. The idea is to help students who are already struggling.. Some people think this is not a good idea. They think it is too hard on the people who are accused of doing something.. They do not think there is enough protection for people who are accused unfairly. The University Grants Commission and the Equity Regulations are still a topic of discussion. The Equity Regulations are trying to make things better, for students who are treated unfairly.. The University Grants Commission needs to make sure they get it right.
At the protest site students gave a list of things they want to University Grants Commission officials. The people who organised the protest said that the University Grants Commission said they will look at some of the things the studentsre worried about and think about making some changes. These changes might include having people from the category on the teams that make sure everyone is treated fairly. The University Grants Commission is also going to make some other things clear, within the two weeks. The students are waiting to see what the University Grants Commission will do about their demands.
100 students took part in the demonstration even though it was raining on and off and there were a lot of police around. The police were there to make sure everything stayed calm. The students who were protesting wanted to point out the problems they see in the rules. They wanted to talk things over with the people in charge of education. They did not want to fight or cause trouble. The students just wanted to have a conversation with the education authorities, about the regulations.
The protests form part of a wider national debate over the role and implementation of the UGC’s Equity Regulations. Similar demonstrations have been reported on campuses outside Delhi, illustrating broader discontent among sections of the student community. Government officials have maintained that the rules aim to create fairer, more accountable campuses while clarifying that implementation details will be refined in consultation with stakeholders.
