New Delhi, October 29, 2025 — In a shocking episode that reflects continued safety risks for women riders, Delhi Police arrested a bike-taxi driver on charges of molesting and stealing a woman passenger in the city’s southern region. Rahul Mehta, 27, was arrested on Monday after a quick investigation that was assisted by CCTV footage and digital tracking of the ride-hailing app.
The crime took place on Saturday night when the 25-year-old marketing executive had taken a ride from Saket to Lajpat Nagar by way of a well-known bike-taxi service. Halfway through the ride, the motorbike is said to have taken a side lane along Chirag Delhi and tried to molest her. When the woman fought back, he is reported to have taken away her phone and wallet and sped away.
Prompt Police Action and Arrest
The victim was able to get to a nearby police outpost and lodged the case. Police officials there registered an FIR under sections relating to molestation, robbery, and criminal intimidation forthwith. Top police officers of the South District set up a special investigation team to trace the suspect.
“Through digital footprints from the app of the ride-hailing service and CCTV from surrounding areas, we tracked the accused within 48 hours,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Rohit Meena added. “The rider had switched off his GPS and canceled his account after the incident, but we were able to track him down through his phone’s IMEI tracking.”
The accused was also arrested from his rented place in Govindpuri, and the stolen belongings, including the woman’s phone and wallet, were recovered. The police have also impounded his motorcycle, which was registered with the bike-taxi firm.
Victim’s Statement and Support
The victim, in her statement, termed the experience as “terrifying” and informed that she no longer felt safe using app-based transport after the experience. I kept asking him to halt the bicycle when I realized he was heading off in a different direction, but he paid no heed. I panicked when he turned into an ill-lit lane,” she added. “I’m grateful to the police for the prompt action, but I hope tighter checks are conducted before drivers like this one are let out.
The police have also linked her with a women’s counseling center and provided her with both psychological counseling and legal aid.
Questions Over App-Based Safety Measures
The incident has again brought into question the responsibility of app-based transport services to ensure passenger safety, particularly women. Most of these platforms have been criticized for poor background checks on drivers and no built-in emergency support functionalities.
A top transport official pointed out that although guidelines are available for such aggregators, enforcement is lax. “The Delhi government has been advocating more stringent verification measures, including regular police clearance for all drivers,” the official said. “This case highlights the pressing need for tighter implementation.”
The affected bike-taxi firm released a statement denouncing the incident and stated that the accused had been permanently blacklisted. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies and are committed to supporting the victim,” company spokesperson stated.
