In a shocking turn of events, the Delhi Police arrested a father for allegedly staging a fake acid attack on his daughter in northwest Delhi’s Bharat Nagar area to implicate an acquaintance over a personal dispute. An incident that initially created outrage and fear across the community, has now unravelled into a deeply disturbing case of manipulation and deceit within the precincts of the family itself.
According to the police, the case was registered when a university student approached them, claiming that an unidentified person had thrown acid on her near Bharat Nagar. The so-called “attack” drew quick public attention; immediate police action was taken, and the woman was treated medically. However, further investigation and forensic examination thereafter showed serious inconsistencies in her statement and the physical evidence.
A shocking revelation
Police said the student gave conflicting versions of the sequence of events during interrogation. Moreover, the CCTV footage from nearby did not corroborate her story. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that no corrosive chemical or acid was found on the girl’s clothes and body; only minor burns due to a non-acidic substance were noted, likely to create an alibi for an elaborate ruse.
Pressed for clarity by detectives, the police later found out that the entire plot had been masterminded by her father, Aqeel Khan, who is already lodged in jail in connection with a rape case. He had allegedly masterminded the scheme from behind bars, instructing his daughter and other family members to stage an attack and blame his long-time rival in hopes that it would discredit the man and strengthen his pending legal case.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Manoj Meena confirmed the arrest, saying, “This was a planned hoax designed to mislead law enforcement and settle personal scores. The father, despite being in judicial custody, manipulated his family to carry out a false narrative of victimhood.”
Family Involvement and Arrests
The probe also resulted in the arrest of the brother and son of the accused, who helped carry out the staged incident. They allegedly aided in acquiring the liquid used to stage acid burns and coached the daughter on how to make her complaint appear credible. Police are now probing how Khan managed to communicate and coordinate the plan from inside prison.
Officials suspect that the father used intermediaries and phone calls made through unauthorized mobile devices within the jail to keep in contact with his family. The jail authorities have been informed, and an internal inquiry has been initiated to find out how Khan accessed the means of communication.
Legal and Social Implications
The revelation has generated widespread condemnation, with women’s rights groups calling it a “disturbing misuse” of the acid attack narrative—one of the most heinous forms of gender-based violence in India. Such false cases, they argue, not only take away much-needed police resources but also break the trust of real survivors who already suffer stigma and are subjected to protracted court procedures.
“Fabricating an acid attack is beyond unethical, it makes a mockery of the pain of those thousands of women who suffer lifelong trauma due to real attacks,” explained Ranjana Kumari, the director of the Centre for Social Research. “This must be dealt with strictly to deter similar manipulations in the future.”
Similarly, lawyers pointed out that under Section 182 of the Indian Penal Code, giving false information with the intent to cause a public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person is an offence punishable with imprisonment. Besides, fabrication of evidence or framing of another person may attract serious criminal charges under Sections 192 and 211 IPC, which could invite imprisonment up to seven years.
A Wake-Up Call for Systemic Reform
The incident has once again drawn attention to the misuse of criminal allegations and the ease with which some inmates continue to operate from inside jail facilities. Tihar Jail, where Khan was lodged, was under scrutiny in several past cases due to alleged use of contraband phones and corrupt networks facilitating illicit activities.
The police in Delhi have now sought detailed call records and jail communication logs to identify the possible lapses in supervision. “We are not just treating this as a family hoax but as a failure of the correctional system that allowed such coordination to happen from behind bars,” a senior officer said.
What Lies Ahead The investigation continues, with the father, brother, and son under arrest, and the daughter accused of involvement in the conspiracy. Authorities have promised to take strict action against all the suspects as per law and may add more charges when the entire conspiracy is unfolded.
