Something big happened in the center of the capital on 9 January 2026. Members of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress staged a protest near the Union Home Ministry in Delhi. They were protesting because they think the central government is misusing its power to investigate people. The Trinamool Congress protest caused a lot of tension and the police in Delhi had to take security measures. The Delhi Police even detained some Members of Parliament from the opposition parties. The Trinamool Congress and other opposition parties are not happy, with the way the central government is using its agencies.
The protest started in the morning. TMC leaders and MPs got together near the North Block area. They were shouting slogans against the government. The TMC leaders and MPs said the central government is targeting opposition parties, like them. They think the government is using the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI to do this. The protesters said these agencies are being used to scare their opponents before big elections. The TMC leaders and MPs believe investigations are being used in a way that’s not fair.
The protest was getting really bad so the police had to act to stop things from getting out of hand in the high-security area. They put up barriers on the roads that lead to the Home Ministry. They also sent police and paramilitary people to the scene. Some members of parliament, like Mahua Moitra were taken away. Held at the police station nearby. This was done to prevent any trouble. The police did this to keep the peace in the area. The Home Ministry is an important place so the police had to make sure everything stayed calm.
The leaders of the TMC said that the people who were detained did not do anything. They think that detaining these people is an attack on people who disagree with the government. The TMC leaders talked to the media. Said that the police are treating peaceful protesters like criminals. They believe that the people who oppose the government are not being allowed to say what they think. The TMC leaders think this is not fair. One of the leaders of the TMC said “This is not just about the TMC this is about the future of democracy in our country.” The TMC leaders are worried about what will happen to democracy. They want people to be able to express their opinions without being arrested. The TMC leaders think that this is very important for the TMC and, for democracy.
Delhi Police officials say they did what they did because of security reasons. They tell us that people are not allowed to protest near government offices. The police gave warnings to the people to leave. They did not listen. A senior police officer, from Delhi Police said that the people who were taken away were done so to prevent trouble and to keep the peace in a sensitive area. Delhi Police officials want to maintain law and order. That is why they took this action.
The protest was important for a reason. It happened near the office of Amit Shah. This was a message to the people in charge of the country.
For a while it was hard to move around in some parts of central Delhi. People were told to take roads because of what was going on. The people, in charge were trying to handle the situation with the protest.
People from all sides were talking about what happened. Some parties that are not in power said they agree with the TMC. They think the central government is not letting people say what they think. At the time people in charge said the protest was just a show. They said the other parties were trying to get people to feel sorry for them by causing trouble in areas where they are not supposed to be. The TMC and the central government are still at odds with each other. The TMC is getting support from parties that are not, in power.
By the afternoon the detained members of parliament were let out. The incident was still the main topic of conversation in politics for the rest of the day. People who study these things said that the protest shows how much tension is increasing between the government and the opposition parties especially when it comes to the central government and the opposition parties and their views on the role and independence of agencies that investigate things like the central government and the opposition parties have different ideas, about it.
As Parliament prepares for crucial sessions and states head toward important elections, the Delhi protest is being seen as a sign of escalating political tension. Whether such confrontations will lead to dialogue or deepen divisions remains to be seen, but the events of 9 January have once again placed Delhi at the centre of India’s evolving political battle.
