A massive fire broke out in an industrial area in West Delhi on Tuesday, causing panic among laborers and residents in the surrounding localities. Thick columns of smoke were witnessed rising from the area, prompting an immediate reaction from the Delhi Fire Service. In what could be termed as some positive news, it was confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported despite the severity of the fire.
According to fire officials, the fire started in one of the industrial units in a heavily populated industrial cluster, which housed various small and medium-scale units. The fire started in the early hours, and on realizing this, various fire tenders were immediately rushed to the spot. The firefighting operation faced difficulties because of small lanes, compact buildings, and the presence of inflammable materials in the units.
Witnesses reported witnessing scenes of chaos as the employees ran out of the complex due to the smoke and fire spreading rapidly. “The fire spread very fast, and smoke occupied the whole area. We immediately evacuated and alerted the fire department,” explained an employee of the manufacturing unit when the fire broke out. Residents nearby were also observed to be moving away from the vicinity for safety reasons.
Firefighters reported that over a dozen fire engines were involved in efforts to contain the fire, as teams worked tirelessly for several hours to ensure it did not spread to the adjoining apartments. Firefighters were able to control the situation, followed by cooling processes to ensure it could not reignite. Firefighters have confirmed that evacuating the employees was vital in helping the incident avoid casualties.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fire could have started because of a short circuit, although the actual reason will emerge after a proper investigation. The civic body has said that a meticulous survey of the fireworks unit that has come under their scanner is required so that the damage caused by these structures to buildings is analyzed. Factory owners can face repercussions if their complexes are not following safety standards related to fire safety. Proper modernization of infrastructure can help avoid such occurrences in the future, according to the Delhi government. As the cleanup process continues, the attention remains fixed on trying to normalize the situation in the region and ensuring business continuity for some of the affected business units. Even as it becomes quite welcome to learn that there were no casualties, it would not be an overstatement to say that this incident is still a grim reminder of how fragile the industrial areas of Delhi are when it comes to firefighting mechanisms.
