Recent scientific assessments have raised a critical alarm for India’s capital: Delhi is sinking. The phenomenon, known as ground subsidence, refers to the gradual settling or sudden sinking of the Earth’s surface. While this might sound slow and distant, the pace at which it is occurring in Delhi is significantly higher than in many other Indian megacities, posing risks to infrastructure, housing, and the everyday lives of millions.
According to the latest satellite-based land-movement study, certain pockets of Delhi are sinking at an estimated rate of up to 50–51 millimeters per year. Areas most affected include regions with high population density and intensive urban development. Alarmingly, nearly 1.7 million people reside in zones identified as highly vulnerable.
What is happening to the land sinking?
This long-continued pumping slowly drains the underground water reserves, leaving gaps where water once existed. As is common throughout much of the Yamuna floodplain and the wider Delhi region, soil and alluvial sediments compact under pressure, causing the land above to slowly sink.

Stricter enforcement on groundwater extraction is essential. Unauthorized borewells, especially in commercial and residential pockets, must be regulated or phased out.
Rainwater Harvesting Expansion:
The city needs to speed up the installations of rainwater harvesting systems in residential complexes, commercial properties, public buildings, and schools.
Restoring Natural Recharge Zones:
Lakes, ponds, and green spaces need to be revived. The Yamuna floodplain, in particular, requires ecologically sensitive restoration.
