New Delhi, October 27, 2025 — As the capital prepares to celebrate the Chhath Puja, one of the biggest festivals for the people of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and other areas of eastern India, the Delhi Traffic Police has released a detailed two-day advisory covering road diversions, prohibitions, and parking facilities all over the city. With hundreds of thousands of worshippers anticipated at different ghats along the Yamuna River, officials are encouraging travelers to carefully plan their commute and steer clear of specific routes in order to avoid jams.
Widespread Preparations Across the Capital
Chhath Puja, dedicated to the Sun God, involves devotees offering prayers and “arghya” to the setting and rising sun while standing in water. The festival has grown in scale over the years, with Delhi’s ghats such as Kalindi Kunj, ITO, Sonia Vihar, Wazirabad, and Yamuna Bazaar transforming into major congregation points.
The Delhi government has made big preparations this year, establishing temporary ghats, deploying sanitation squads, and providing lighting, barricading, and the availability of clean water. “More than 1,000 ghats have been set up in Delhi, and we are working day and night to provide no inconvenience to devotees,” claimed Delhi Revenue Minister Atishi Marlena.
She further noted that the Delhi Jal Board and Municipal Corporation of Delhi have been directed to carry out proper cleaning and water supply, while the Public Works Department (PWD) will be responsible for lighting and safety barricades along riverbanks.
Traffic Restrictions and Diversions
To handle the anticipated rush and facilitate smooth flow, the Delhi Traffic Police has declared a number of diversions from Monday night until Tuesday morning. The major ghats access roads will have partial or total closure during puja hours.
Kalindi Kunj Area: Traffic flow on the Kalindi Kunj–Noida road will be severely limited. Those going from Noida to Delhi should take the route of the DND Flyway or Akshardham instead.
ITO and Yamuna Bazaar: Vikas Marg, Ring Road, and Rajghat connecting roads can face diversions as a result of congestion at ITO and surrounding ghats. Drivers are recommended to take alternate routes through Nizamuddin Bridge or Sarai Kale Khan.
Wazirabad and Majnu Ka Tila: Heavy traffic has been diverted on the Outer Ring Road between Wazirabad. Buses and goods carriers have been directed to take the Mukarba Chowk–Burari bypass route.
South Delhi: Commercial trucks will not be allowed on GT Road between Shastri Park and Yudhishthir Setu from 5 PM to 7 PM on Monday and 5 AM to 7 AM on Tuesday in Bhajanpura and Khadar localities.
Secondly, parking will be prohibited close to main ghats and nearby roads. Devotees who come in private vehicles are requested to park their vehicles in specified areas marked by traffic authorities only. The public has also been asked by police to avail themselves of the metro and public transport wherever feasible.
Metro and Public Transport Arrangements
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said it will operate one hour extra on major lines to facilitate late-night and early-morning travel by devotees. Special care has been taken at stations close to ghats like Yamuna Bank, Kashmere Gate, and Sarai Kale Khan Nizamuddin.
The DTC and cluster buses will have extra services on busy routes, especially from Anand Vihar, Lajpat Nagar, and Dwarka to riverbank locations.
Safety and Crowd Management Measures
Since a huge turnout is anticipated in the festival, policemen and civil defense volunteers have been mobilized in large numbers. More than 4,000 Delhi Police personnel and paramilitary troops are deployed at prominent ghats to oversee peace and help devotees. CCTV cameras have been placed at strategic points for live coverage.
Fire brigades, ambulances, and rescue units will be kept on standby during the celebratory period. Loudspeakers have also been banned outside authorized limits and fireworks close to ghats warned against by authorities.
“Public safety is paramount to us,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Apoorva Gupta. “We are coordinating closely with the disaster management and health departments to facilitate smooth and safe celebration of Chhath Puja. Devotees are appealed to obey traffic rules and assist the authorities.”
Public Advisory
Citizens are requested to undertake non-essential travel in ghat-flanking zones between 4 PM and 10 PM on Monday and 4 AM and 8 AM on Tuesday. Those traveling to railway terminals, airports, or workplaces should access live traffic reports through Google Maps and the Delhi Police traffic helpline (1095) or Twitter account (@dtptraffic).
The Delhi government has also urged citizens to celebrate the festival responsibly by refraining from using plastic and disposing of waste into the Yamuna. Environmental volunteers will stand at major ghats to redirect devotees to designated bins of disposal.
