The city of Delhi is going through a bad time with air pollution. The Air Quality Index in Delhi is very bad. On 20 January 2026 Delhi had a lot of particles in the air, which is not normal for this time of year. There is a fog like thing all over Delhi you can not see very far and it is not good for the people who live in Delhi. Delhi is experiencing bad air quality and it is a big problem, for the people of Delhi.

AQI Readings and Health Risks

The air in Delhi is really bad now. Delhis air quality is so poor that it is repeatedly going over 400. This is very severe. It is dangerous for peoples health. In some areas like Anand Vihar and Rohini the air is even worse. The bad things in the air like fine particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 are at levels that’re much higher than what is safe. The levels of PM2.5 and PM10 are, above what is considered safe in Delhi and all around the world. Delhis air quality is a problem because of the high levels of PM2.5 and PM10.

The bad air in our city is making a lot of people sick. It is giving them trouble breathing and irritating their eyes. This is a problem for kids, old people and people who already have breathing or heart problems. Doctors are saying that these people are in a lot of danger. The government is telling us to stay and not go out unless we have to. If we do have to go out we should wear a mask to help keep us safe. The bad air is really bad, for our health so we need to be careful.

Contributing Factors

The air is really bad. There are a lot of things that have made it this way. Several factors have contributed to the air quality:

Calm weather conditions and low wind speeds trap pollutants close to the ground.

In the winter temperature inversions are a problem. They stop smoke and particulate matter from spreading out. This means that the smoke and particulate matter from things like cars and factories just stay in the air. The winter temperature inversions are really bad, for the air quality because they trap the smoke and particulate matter.

The air in our area is still really bad because of all the pollution from cars, dust from construction sites and smoke from factories. Local emissions from vehicles are a problem. We also have a lot of construction dust and industrial outputs that’re very harmful. These local emissions from vehicles, construction dust and industrial outputs are always, at levels.

The air in our region is really bad because of pollution. This pollution comes from a lot of things including when farmers burn the leftover stalks from their fields in the states around us. This has been happening for a time and it just makes the air worse. The states, around us are burning a lot of stubble. That is adding to the pollution problem.

Government and Policy Response

The air is really bad now, with AQI readings being very severe. So the authorities have had to take some action. They have started Stage-IV of the Graded Response Action Plan, which is also known as GRAP. This means they are putting in place the rules to control pollution. These rules include:

Restrictions on construction activities.

Limitations on heavy vehicle movements.

Increased monitoring of polluting sources across the city.

The experts say that there are some problems with enforcing the rules in areas. They think that if the rules were enforced in an more consistent way it could really help to reduce the big increases in pollution that happen sometimes. The experts believe that stronger enforcement of the rules is the key, to stopping these pollution spikes from happening in the future and that pollution is a big problem that needs to be addressed.

Outlook and Public Advisory

The weather forecast says it might rain this week. This rain could help get rid of some of the stuff in the air for a little while.. The air quality will probably stay bad until we get a big change in the weather or people start doing a better job of reducing emissions. The air quality will stay poor because of all the things in the air like the particulate matter, from Meteorological forecasts until something changes with the Meteorological forecasts and the emission controls.

Residents are urged to monitor real-time AQI data, stay informed of health advisories, and take precautions — such as using air purifiers indoors and avoiding outdoor exercise — particularly during morning and evening hours when pollution concentrations peak.
