On 17 January 2026 the city of Delhi was still dealing with a bad air pollution problem. The Air Quality Index levels were so bad that they were considered hazardous. This made Delhi one of the 10 most polluted cities in the world on that day. A big cloud of smog covered a lot of the National Capital Region. This made it very hard to see. It made a lot of people worried about their health. The air pollution crisis in Delhi was a problem, for the millions of people who live there. Delhi was still struggling with the air and the Air Quality Index levels were not getting any better.

The city has a lot of air quality monitoring stations. They found that the air has very high amounts of PM2.5 and PM10. These are the things that we breathe in and they go deep into our lungs and bloodstream. Some places in the city had bad air quality readings, which means the air is not safe for anyone, even people who are healthy. This happens every winter in Delhi. The air gets very bad because of what people do. The weather is not good either. The PM2.5 and PM10 levels are a problem in Delhi, during the winter.

The main things that are making the air bad are the smoke from cars, dust from construction stuff from factories and people burning biomass in other areas around us. When it is winter the wind does not blow much. The cold air gets stuck close to the ground so all the bad air gets trapped. The fog makes it even worse because it helps the smog stay around all day and all night and that is really bad, for the air.

The air quality is getting really bad. The people, in charge are making rules to control pollution again. They are doing this under the Graded Response Action Plan, which is also known as GRAP. The Graded Response Action Plan has rules that stop people from doing construction work limit the use of cars and trucks that pollute a lot and keep a close eye on factories. With the Graded Response Action Plan experts say that these actions will only help for a little while. The Graded Response Action Plan will not really work unless the government makes changes that will last for a long time.

The air we breathe is really bad for our health. Doctors say that a lot of people are getting sick with things like coughs, irritated eyes, sore throats and it is hard for them to breathe. This is especially true for kids, old people and people who have asthma or heart problems. The people, in charge of keeping us healthy are telling us to stay wear masks when we go out and make sure our homes are closed up tight which would be even better if we used air purifiers to clean the air we breathe. The air quality is hazardous. That is why we need to be careful.

Daily life in the city is really tough now. The smog and fog are making it very hard to see on the roads, which is causing a lot of traffic problems and accidents.

Flights and train services were running late in the morning because you could not see far.

Schools and offices are telling people to be careful especially when the air is the polluted like, during rush hour when the city is the busiest.

In the days to come the weather forecast says that if it does not rain or if the wind does not change direction the pollution levels in Delhi may stay high. The people who study the environment are still saying that we need to make some changes to the rules have cleaner ways of getting around and work together with other cities to stop the air in Delhi from getting so bad every year. The pollution levels, in Delhi may stay high for a while. Environmental experts think that Delhi needs transport systems and regional coordination to stop this from happening. Delhis air quality is a problem that needs to be solved.

As of January 17, Delhi’s hazardous air serves as a stark reminder of the city’s ongoing environmental challenge—one that demands urgent attention, collective responsibility, and long-term solutions beyond seasonal emergency measures.
