Ahead of the massive pilgrimage spike expected at the end of the year, Indian Railways will operate a special train service linking New Delhi with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, which ranks among India’s most-visited religious spots. The new service will operate for a short period ending mid-December as a response to pressure and to satisfy an increase in demand for travel.
The move follows data on bookings, which showed a substantial spurt in the number of passengers traveling on regular trains plying the same route. As a result, with trains running almost at full capacity, controlling authorities have introduced a special train for passengers.
Timing and Route Details
It has been confirmed by railway authorities that this special train will start from New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) and will arrive at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) on the next morning. The train will travel overnight, which will benefit devotees considerably. The train will have stops at several stations on its route, including but not limited to Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Jammu Tawi.
The train consists of a combination of AC 2 Tier, AC 3 Tier, Sleeper, and General classes. According to representatives, there has been a focus on expanding AC berths, given that most senior piligrims want to travel at night through an air-conditioned compartment.
Causes for the Supplemental Service Requirement
December witnesses a large influx of devotees at Vaishno Devi, with an enormous increase every year. The road connectivity and services offered in the form of helicopters and battery cars near the Bhawan have encouraged senior devotees and family members to make winter trips.
But these have been some remarkable times for it. Rail booking statistics revealed:
A 20-25% increase in demand for north-bound religious travel
Trains heavily loaded on various routes leading to Jammu and Katra
Large numbers of people waiting even with additional coaches being introduced
To avoid congestion and travel troubles, a special service train proposal from the Northern Railway zone is cleared and included in December schedules.
Benefit for Pilgrims, and Tourism Economy
The special train will be of immense help to the devotees as they usually have problems getting confirmed reservations on regular trains bound for Katra. The special train will enable devotees traveling from the capital city to get a direct train for an overnight journey.
The local tourism community in Katra welcomes this move and finds it satisfying because more tourist entry rates directly benefit hotels, shopping centers, restaurants, ponywalas, and other service sectors. The end-of-the-year pilgrimage season is very significant for Katra, and better transport facilities often generate more footfalls.
A representative from a hotel association said, “Whenever Railways reduces waiting times or introduces special trains, we get an immediate boost. Fans often plan at short notice. So, special trains make it easier for them to travel.”
Environmental and Health Regulations
Railways made it clear that “the special train will operate under more strict winter protocol guidelines, including:”
Pre-departure Mechanical Checks because of Fog-Season Visibility Conditions
Addition of more employees on board for security and assisting passengers
Availability of Hot Water in AC Coaches
Medical facilities at major halts
Moreover, it has been advised that passengers should check their train status frequently because winter fog can bring timing changes in North India.
To help senior and physically differently abled passengers, help desks will remain functional at both New Delhi and Katra stations. Volunteers from the passenger facilitation wing of the railways would assist passengers, and first-time visitors to the shrine would be given special focus.
High Demand Expected
Only a short time after the news broke, initial booking figures have shown that several classes on the first service are already approaching sold-out status. It is expected that if passenger numbers continue to be high, extra dates may be required. As yet, no extension has been confirmed, but Railways have made it clear that they are happy to operate more special services if travel patterns continue as they are.
A Devotional Journey Just Got Easier It will be a very pious and cherished experience for millions of followers. The introduction of special trains will allow people to travel more comfortably and with more certainty. It will be an even more stressful experience if it happens at a time like peak season. As the first trains are about to leave from New Delhi, it becomes clear that “the objective remains the same – to ensure every devotee who wishes to visit the shrine can do so with convenience and peace of mind.”
