In a significant counter-terror operation, Delhi Police had detained two persons, a 19-year-old Md Adnan and a 20-year-old boy, on charges of allegedly plotting suicide attacks in the national capital. The arrests are made after a red alert had been sounded earlier this month following intelligence inputs regarding potential threats to public safety.

The Arrests and Investigation

The two suspects had been under watch for a few weeks following intelligence intercepts of communications implicating them in radical activities, Delhi Police officials said. On receiving credible information, the Delhi Police’s Special Cell conducted an operation in the wee hours of October 25 that led to the arrests of both suspects without any loss of life.

Md Adnan, a Delhi resident, and his partner, whose name has not been released as inquiries are still underway, are said to have been radicalized on the Internet and were in touch with ISIS operatives abroad. The initial investigations indicate that the two had been working on trying to source material to carry out a suicide bombing in the city.

While conducting raids at their homes, police seized an array of articles that have the potential to be used in the construction of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), along with extremist literature, digital equipment with records of communications, and terrorist network-related propaganda materials. The evidence is now being analyzed forensic to determine the scope of their intentions and affiliations.

Terror Alert and Police Vigilance

The arrests come after a terror alert released by Delhi Police and the Intelligence Bureau warned of potential attacks in crowded public places, including metro stops, markets, and religious events. Security agencies, acting on the alert, had stepped up patrolling, deployed extra surveillance squads, and tightened security at key infrastructure points within the city.

Authority figures pointed out that the operation was carried out in a precise manner in order not to compromise public safety, adding that the suspects were caught before they could carry out any attack. “The timely intervention and coordination among intelligence agencies and the Delhi Police Special Cell saved the day, preventing a possible tragedy,” a high-ranking police officer stated.

Broader Context and Previous Incidents

The bust is a testament to Delhi Police’s consistent efforts to counter extremist networks and thwart terrorist attacks in the city. In recent years, law enforcement agencies have foiled various plots that were inspired by global terrorist groups, highlighting the increasing need to remain vigilant against homegrown radicalization and online recruitment by extremist groups.

In the past, members of ISIS or other terror groups were arrested in Delhi and the surrounding areas for plotting attacks, recruiting young people, or spreading radical propaganda. The authorities say that young adults are still especially at risk from being radicalized online because of the ease of access to extremist materials and social media platforms.

Legal Proceedings and Investigation

The arrested suspects have been placed in police custody under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and are being questioned by Delhi Police Special Cell squads. Investigators are tracking their online activities and transactions to uncover any conspirators or facilitation networks within India or overseas.

All efforts are being made to ensure that the investigation is carried out until all the connections with terrorist groups are completely eradicated. “Our target is to see that each and every person involved in plotting acts of terror is brought to justice, and citizens remain safe,” declared the Special Cell officer handling the case.

Public Safety Measures

Delhi Police has asked citizens to be alert and report to law and order authorities any suspicious person or activity. The police force has assured that its concern for public safety remains unwavering and that counter-terror operations are being conducted citywide to ensure threats do not come to fruition.

The detention of Md Adnan and his accomplice highlights the important role of intelligence-based policing in securing city centers from terror threats. Through swift action on actionable intelligence, Delhi Police not only foiled a proposed attack but also reinforced its proactive approach to addressing radicalization and extremism in the capital.

As the investigation continues, authorities remain vigilant to potential threats and cooperate closely with national security agencies to protect the people of Delhi so that such plots do not pose a threat to the city’s peace and security.
