A huge blaze erupted in a Members of Parliament (MPs’) residential complex in New Delhi in the wee hours of Saturday morning, leaving residents in panic and triggering a prompt response by fire and rescue forces. The fire was at MS Flats on Dr. B.D. Marg, which is one of the central government housing complexes where several current and former MPs live.

Fire Breaks Out in the Early Hours

The fire was reported at around 4:10 a.m., with heavy smoke billowing out of one of the upper floors of the multi-storey residential complex, the DFS officials said. As soon as the call for help came in, 12 fire tenders were rushed to the site. The firefighters were able to gain control of the situation after more than two hours of heavy operation.

A top DFS official said, “The fire began in one of the apartments and spread very quickly to neighboring areas, possibly caused by electrical equipment or wiring. Luckily, no casualties or injuries have been reported thus far.”

Residents Evacuated Safely

Security and firefighters moved quickly to clear all the residents out of the involved block. Some MPs and their families were witnessed fleeing in early morning hours as alarm bells rang. Officials said dozens of residents, including children and elderly members, were evacuated safely to surrounding open spaces.

Witnesses witnessed scenes of pandemonium as smoke filled the corridors. “We were alerted by the smell of fire and loud banging on our doors. In a matter of minutes, the floor was full of smoke. Fortunately, the fire teams arrived promptly,” said a resident.

Cause Under Investigation

Early reports indicate that the blaze could have been caused by an electrical short circuit in one of the flats, although a full forensic inquiry is under way. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and Delhi Police officials have sealed the damaged region for survey.

The cause will be established only after the forensic and fire department team examines it. Maintenance and safety checks are also being conducted in other apartments as a precautionary measure,” a top police officer said.

Quick Action by Fire Department and Authorities

The Delhi Fire Service came in for appreciation for its swift action, which helped check the spread of the fire to other structures in the complex. Water tankers and hydraulic lifts were used to reach top floors, and firemen worked day and night to keep the fire under control.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri were informed about the incident. Both have demanded a safety audit of all MP residential complexes in Lutyens’ Delhi.

No Serious Losses, But Property Damages Reported

Though no human loss was reported, authorities asserted that property amounting to several lakhs has been devastated, such as furniture, records, and electrical gadgets. Power supply to the building was cut off temporarily to avoid more danger.

CPWD sources said the renovation and repair of the building would start shortly, and those residents temporarily relocated to other government accommodations would be provided with all facilities that they would require.

Fresh Concerns Over Government Housing Fire Safety

The incident has again brought into question the fire safety infrastructure within the older government housing colonies in Delhi. Various MPs have already raised concerns regarding old wiring, no smoke detectors, and inadequate fire extinguishers in the older complexes.

A top Delhi Fire Service official added, “This case shows the critical need for safety audits, regular maintenance, and government residential quarters’ modernization. Prevention is the best means of evading such possibly catastrophic occurrences.”

Incendious at New Delhi MPs’ residential complex comes as a hard reminder of the need for fire preparedness, even within high-security areas. Due to the quick response from the Delhi Fire Service and security personnel, a disaster was avoided. Authorities have assured that appropriate measures will be taken to guarantee people’s safety and avoid such incidents in the future.

The capital’s administration is now expected to tighten fire safety norms and expedite the long-pending modernization of official housing complexes — ensuring that Delhi’s most prominent neighborhoods remain secure for those who serve the nation.
