Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday, September 26, 2025, inaugurated a cutting-edge compressed biogas (CBG) plant and an integrated CBG-CNG fuel station at Ghogha Dairy, which is a milestone in the city’s path to sustainable waste management and clean energy.
A Step Towards Sustainable Energy
The recently inaugurated plant, constructed at a cost of ₹30 crore, is located on three acres of land provided by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) at Ghogha Dairy on the Narela-Bawana road. The facility has the capacity to treat 100 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day and turn it into nearly four tonnes of compressed biogas per day. This biogas will be a clean and renewable substitute for fossil fuels, helping lower greenhouse gas emissions as well as improve the air quality in the urban city. The combined CBG-CNG fuelling station will enable the dissemination of this biogas in compressed natural gas form for automotive use, helping bring cleaner modes of transportation to the capital city.
A Joint Venture for Cleaner Delhi
The commissioning of the Ghogha Dairy biogas plant is a result of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) of January 4, 2022, between Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) and the MCD. The IGL has taken the initiative to establish and run the plant under this partnership, while the MCD has offered the required land and assistance. The plant comprises two digester units with a combined capacity of 6,000 cubic metres, ensuring efficient processing of organic waste into biogas.
Transforming Rural Delhi
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised that this initiative is part of a broader effort to transform rural Delhi into a model of cleanliness and sustainability.
She called the project “writing a new history in the villages of rural Delhi”, emphasising its possibility to transform Delhi into a garbage-free, green city. The site chosen for the plant in Ghogha Dairy highlights the determination of the government to take on waste management problems in the rural sector so that the benefits of such initiatives reach every corner of the city.
A Model for Future Projects
The Ghogha Dairy biogas plant provides a model for future waste-to-energy initiatives in Delhi. It supports the city’s larger agenda of weaning off landfill, propelling renewable energy, and enhancing air quality.
