With the rush of business during the winter season and more customers thronging the markets before the new year, the Delhi Fire Department has increased safety checks in some of the busiest markets. The decision has come at a time when the commercial centers are experiencing peak activity because of the last-minute Christmas and new year shopping.
Delhi Fire Service officials said special checking drives were conducted in busy business areas such as Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, and Sarojini Nagar, as well as large whole-seller markets. These areas are well-known for their narrow roads, compact business units, and extensive use of electricity, making them potential fire hazards during the winter months.
Emphasize High Risk Regions
As reported, the major areas inspected included electrical wiring, fire extinguishers, emergency exit points, and routes leading fire vehicles. Special emphasis was given to markets having old infrastructure and unauthorized extensions. Unstable wiring can pose fire risks.
“In particular, the risk is acute when markets are congested during the winter months because of the general increase in electricity use, the use of heaters, light decoration, and the temporary storage of combustibles,” explained a senior DFS official. “The focus is therefore on risk identification and the implementation of measures before an event occurs,” the senior officer explained.
Key Issues Identified
Some of the issues, which have been identified during these inspections, include blocked emergency exits, non-functional fire extinguishers, illegal encroachment of access roads, and overloaded electric circuits. Some of the markets have posed a challenge to the access of the inner roads by the firefighting vehicles due to irregular parking and vendor stands.
The shopkeepers were given on the spot advice, and in some instances, written notice, asking them to adhere to the safety norms within the stipulated period of time. Violations of safety norms were then reported to the local authorities.
Coordination with Civic Agencies
The fire department coordinated with the various municipal corporations and the local police to ensure proper implementation of the safety steps. Traffic police were also informed in places where congestion might hinder the passage of the ambulances.
Market organizations were encouraged to establish volunteer fire marshals with the capacity to aid in crowd control and initial responses in emergency situations. Officials with DFS stressed that early warning and fast response actions could greatly minimize fire damage.
Awareness and Preventive Measures
