Delhi Traffic Police have increased their presence around accident spots in different locations of Delhi in order to ensure road safety in view of low visibility because of impending Delhi fog and congestion in Delhi roads during morning and evening peaks.
As per official information, manpower has been deployed at “black spots”; they are areas of increased numbers of accidents on roads over the past few years. These spots involve major arterial roads, crossing points in and around markets and schools, and areas connecting residential and commercial areas. The strategy is to ensure smooth flow of traffic and prevent accidents.
According to the senior officials, adverse effects of the winter conditions make the fate of road accidents prone. Drivers tend to overspeed and overlook traffic signals, pedestrians, and cyclists, especially during the early morning when dense fog makes the road invisible. However, to reduce the increasing number of accidents, the traffic police units have been carrying out checks on overspeeding, signal jumping, drunk, and lane riding.
Apart from the use of manpower, traffic police have also expanded the use of technological monitoring techniques. Cameras, speed guns, and automated challan systems are being used to trace and fine violators. Reflective barriers and warning signs have also been erected in accident-prone areas to warn drivers in advance.
Special attention is being paid to heavy vehicular traffic during off-peak hours. Truckers and MUVs are being advised to move along specific routes and strictly adhere to speed constraints, particularly in areas where pedestrians are also present. Traffic volunteers and civil defence officials have been brought on board at specific intersection points to help commuters and enforce discipline on the roadways.
Officials say there has been improvement in cooperation with other municipal bodies regarding problems of infrastructure that led to accidents. Poor painting of roadlines, breakages in road dividers, nonfunctioning traffic lights, and insufficient lighting are identified and made good based on priorities. The diversions through alternative routes are also carefully planned.
Public awareness is also a major part of the initiative. The traffic police are using various means such as social media platforms and direct conversations on the need to drive carefully and observe traffic rules. Pedestrians are also being encouraged to use the crossing points and refrain from crossing the roads when it is foggy.
Citizens have generally responded positively to increased policing, observing greater traffic decorum on most of the busy intersections. Commuters have also noticed improved traffic flow as congestion is cleared easily. However, both the government and the police have appealed to citizens to offer a Helping Hand by heeding to traffic rules.
Traffic police have stated that the increased presence will be a continuous process throughout the winter months and may be extended depending on the requirement. Data generated through these initiatives will help improve strategies for accident prevention and new zones for risk will be identified. While Delhi is dealing with the onset of typical conditions like fog and high traffic, the government feels strongly that active enforcement, infrastructure assistance, and people’s cooperation will be essential for fewer accidents on the roads.
