With the increase in foot traffic observed in commercial areas during the winter season and year-end shopping season, the Fire Department has stepped up safety checks in crowded markets of Delhi. This exercise is a precautionary measure against the possibility of fire incidents occurring and to be ready as a contingency plan for the safety of customers, traders, and residents of the surrounding neighborhood.
The Delhi Fire Service has said that checking parties have been placed across major markets, including whole sale markets, shopping streets, and congested markets, where high congestion, narrow roads, and temporary electric connections are causes such markets are often noticed to be under high fire risk.
In the course of the inspections, the officials are monitoring wiring in buildings, installation of firefighting apparatus, emergency exits, and storage of inflammable materials. Retail businesses with supplemental lighting, decorative units, or heating devices during the winter season are being warned to check their wiring practices. Temporary additions, in particular overloading of sockets, which are known causes of short circuiting, are meticulously scrutinized too.
The markets that tend to have old buildings are being given special care. The commercial buildings in Delhi are old and may not be up to fire safety regulations. The fire officials are checking building designs, stairs, and ventilation systems in respect of evacuating people in case of an emergency. The owners of businesses are being told not to block fire exits or passages with goods.
Readiness in fire fighting is also an important area of emphasis. The authorities are verifying if there are fire-fighting equipment, sand buckets, and access to water in the shops and market associations. Fire departments in some areas are also conducting demonstration lessons for shop owners on how to operate fire-fighting equipment in the early moments of fire breakout, so as to control small outbreaks before they result in large disasters.
Crowd management is also in focus as part of the safety audit. With festive sales and winter shopping attracting huge footfall, chances are high that the markets turn jam-packed, making it tough to undertake emergency response measures. The fire authorities are working in collaboration with market associations to ensure temporary barricading, controlled points of entry, and adequate routes for emergency vehicles.
Authorities said that creating awareness is a major problem. Though most shop owners are responsive and supportive during the time of inspections, some lack knowledge regarding simple fire safety procedures. As a result, the department is also focussing upon education along with enforcement. Oral and written warnings are being given, stipulating what needs to be done within a specific time period.
These inspections have already resulted in certain corrective measures in various markets. The stores flouting safety standards have been warned. There have been notices in certain cases of non-compliance. It has been clarified that the objective of these inspections is not punitive but preventive. It is crucial to ensure adherence before the peak shopping season.
Consumers welcomed the move, noting that the visible fire and safety checks give them confidence to visit crowded markets. Regular consumers of the markets noted that fire breakouts in business premises can result in devastating effects, especially during peak hours when evacuation may be difficult. Consumers hoped that the safety checks will go beyond the festive period.
Officials from the fire department confirmed that safety inspections are going to continue in the coming weeks and will extend to additional markets and commercial complexes. Surprise inspection visits may also be carried out to monitor this issue. The fire department has requested shopkeepers and market associations to follow safety parameters on their own. With winter approaching and expected to bring more business activity to Delhi, the pro-active stance taken by the fire department in this context has underlined the significance and need for prevention and preparedness. This initiative of the authorities has already ensured that shopping destinations in the city are both thriving and safe.
