NIT Delhi Marks Major Educational Milestone as President Murmu Urges Technology for Social Impact

The National Institute of Technology Delhi celebrated a milestone as it held its 5th Convocation Ceremony, graced by President of India Droupadi Murmu as the Chief Guest. Sectors such as renewable energy, smart urban infrastructure, cybersecurity, AI, and semiconductor manufacturing are expanding at an unfathomable rate. Murmu urged students to think beyond conventional career paths and look for contributing towards public innovations, rural development solutions, and climate-tech initiatives. She emphasized that technology which does not touch human lives meaningfully remains incomplete in its purpose.

A key takeaway of her message was to bridge the rural-urban digital divide. While India has been progressing well in terms of digital infrastructure, such as expanding its internet and digital public goods like UPI, rural areas are still considerably far behind in ensuring proper access to high-quality digital tools and learning resources. President Murmu encouraged NIT Delhi students and researchers to take up projects that improve technology accessibility in remote areas, whether through affordable devices, community-driven digital platforms or engineering solutions tailored to rural needs. She also commended the institute’s efforts at fostering innovation through its incubation centres, research labs and industry partnerships.

She highlighted several issues that have cropped up-data privacy, ethical AI, sustainable engineering practices, environmental responsibility-while reminding them that decisions taken in professional careers will have wide-ranging impacts on society. The convocation also underlined the continuing rise of NIT Delhi in academic and research prowess. Many of the research projects that are currently in progress have already attracted recognition for their potential applications in national programs such as Make in India, Digital India, and National Education Policy – NEP 2020.
