Delhi Government’s 55 MW Solar Push: 1,000 Buildings to Get Rooftop Panels

Under a big push towards clean energy and sustainability, the Delhi government has announced ambitious plans to put up solar panels on about 1,000 government buildings. The project to tap 55 megawatts (MW) of solar power is estimated to bring down electricity bills by more than ₹50 crore every year and cut down carbon emissions by around 46,000 tonnes of CO₂ every year.

Scope & What Buildings Are Included

The solar installations will cover a broad range of public buildings:

Hundreds of government schools

Over 40 fire stations

24 offices of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB)

Over 70 buildings of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)

The project requires all government buildings with rooftops greater than 500 square metres to be fitted with rooftop solar plants.

Of the 3,880 buildings which fit this category, over 1,200 have rooftop solar installations already.

Timeline & Implementation

The project was formally rolled out in Rithala (North-West Delhi) where a 25 kW solar plant was commissioned in a sewage treatment plant.

By next January is the target date for completion of the complete rollout.

The initiative is planned in phases, ranging from carrying out surveys, retrofitting roofs, providing grid connections, and fitting the panels themselves.
