Security has been escalated in the National Capital Region (NCR) after intelligence agencies issued a new threat alert. Delhi Police and security forces are on high alert after receiving this new threat alert, which has been characterized as a precautionary measure. There is increased surveillance at various security-sensitive spots, public places, transportation nodes, and government property.
After the alert, more police personnel have been employed all over the capital, especially in crowded spots including the railway stations, metro stations, airports, transport points, markets, and public places. Security checks have also been tightened, and there is rigorous patting down of passengers, enhanced checks of all vehicles, and the installation of metal detectors and sniffer dogs. Certain areas saw the installation of barricades, thus affecting the flow of traffic in Delhi and the National Capital Region.
According to senior officials in the police force, the alert was released due to certain intelligence inputs; however, the information has not been shared due to certain reasons in relation to national security. As per reports, the authorities have clarified that citizens do not need to panic as the high alert was only a precautionary measure to keep law and order in the country while also ensuring the citizens feel secured.
The metro stations in the city of Delhi were not left behind in the security arrangements either. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) security personnel were seen conducting more frequent random checks on baggage and commuters, with heightened surveillance by means of CCTV cameras too. Public addresses were made for commuters to comply with the security personnel and report any suspicious activity or objects immediately. This was the case at the Indira Gandhi International Airport too.
Major government structures, embassies, and judicial stations, as well as strategic sites within the NCR, have been put under tight security surveillance. More police patrols were deployed late at night, and quick response teams were deployed at strategic areas to enable a rapid response in the event of an emergency. Security checks were also carried out at learning institutions, hospitals, and business centers.
Citizens in both Delhi and NCR felt that there was an increased presence of police forces, especially in Central Delhi, Connaught Place, South Delhi Markets, and around borders in other states. In other cities like Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, their police forces were in constant coordination with those of Delhi to monitor activity without gaps at their borders.
The security departments have advised people to be cautious and refrain from spreading rumors and “unconfirmed information.” The helpline numbers as well as police control rooms are open 24/7, and people have been urged to distribute any information they might find useful for law enforcement departments. People are also advised by authorities to “account for extra time in their road journey because of security points” and cooperate with police officers on duty.
However, experts reveal that more security alerts can be part of normal preventive policing strategies even in such a sensitive and densely populated urban setting as Delhi. Also, being the habitat for high political, economic, and diplomatic structures, NCR can experience more security even in times when the threat perception level goes up. Although such alerts can be annoying at times, they could be unavoidable for maintaining the safety level of the people.
As the alert is in effect, the security forces are monitoring the situation very closely. They are re-evaluuing their strategy according to the inputs received. It has again been asserted that life can go on without interruption, and people are advised to go about their business while remaining careful. This is a reminder for the need for preparation as well as cooperation among several security bodies to ensure the safety of the country’s capital. Through high alertness, it is ensured that peace is maintained in the National Capital Region.
