Delhi Prepares for First-Ever Artificial Rain to Combat Air Pollution

In a first-of-its-kind initiative to tackle Delhi’s chronic air pollution, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the city will perform its first-ever artificial rain through cloud seeding on October 29, 2025. The attempt would aim to correct the deleterious air quality levels that have routinely beleaguered the capital, particularly during winter.

What Is Cloud Seeding?

Cloud seeding is a weather alteration method that increases a cloud’s rainfall-producing capability. By releasing substances such as silver iodide or sodium chloride into the atmosphere, these particles act as nuclei where water can condense and precipitate. Preparations and Trials

The Delhi government’s cloud seeding experiment is a joint venture with IIT Kanpur. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to carry out five cloud seeding experiments, mainly on northwest Delhi. The project has been approved by 23 departments, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), to ensure safety and air traffic control regulations are followed. Funding has been provided, and IIT Kanpur will be using its aircraft for the operation. The trials have been approved between October 1 and November 30, 2025.

A milestone was reached when specialists successfully conducted a cloud seeding trial in the Burari region. The trial proved the operation feasible and offered insights for the full-scale implementation to be implemented later.

Weather Conditions and Timing

The success of cloud seeding depends on certain weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also predicted the likelihood of conducive cloud cover on October 28, 29, and 30. If the situation is favorable, Delhi will have its first artificial rain on October 29. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, however, made it clear that the operation would only be initiated when sufficient moisture and conducive clouds are available. This conservative method highlights the technical and ecological requirements needed for successful cloud seeding operations.

This project of artificial rain is a big leap in Delhi’s environmental plan.
