Surprise Rain Catches Delhi-NCR Off Guard Amid Ongoing Cold Wave

Residents across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to an unexpected change in weather on Friday morning as light rain lashed several areas amid persistent cold wave conditions. The sudden rainfall came as a surprise, as earlier weather forecasts had not indicated precipitation for the capital region.

The rain arrived at a time when Delhi-NCR has already been struggling with dense fog, biting cold, and falling temperatures, adding to the discomfort for commuters and early risers. With the cold wave still active, weather officials have warned that temperatures are likely to dip further in the coming days.

Rainfall Brings Temporary Relief From Pollution

AQI Expected to Improve After Showers

One immediate impact of the rain is a likely improvement in air quality. Delhi and its surrounding cities have been witnessing Air Quality Index levels fluctuating between poor and very poor over the past several days.

The rainfall is expected to help settle dust and pollutants in the air, offering temporary relief to residents dealing with respiratory discomfort, eye irritation, and reduced visibility caused by pollution and fog.

However, experts caution that this improvement may be short-lived unless supported by sustained weather changes.

Weather Department Updates: More Rain Possible

IMD Predicts Light to Moderate Rainfall

Following the surprise showers, the India Meteorological Department said that light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue across Delhi and parts of Haryana and Rajasthan over the next few hours.

Weather officials indicated that cloud cover and moisture in the atmosphere could lead to intermittent drizzle or light rain at isolated locations, further intensifying the cold conditions.

Areas That Witnessed Rain in Delhi

Central and East Delhi See Early Morning Showers

Several prominent areas of Delhi experienced light rainfall early in the morning. These included Preet Vihar, ITO, India Gate, Akshardham, Safdarjung, Lodhi Road, RK Puram and Defence Colony.

The rain in these regions led to damp roads and slower traffic movement during peak morning hours.

Light Drizzle in West and South Delhi

Other parts of the capital saw intermittent drizzle rather than continuous rain. Areas such as Mundka, Paschim Vihar, Rajouri Garden, Rajiv Chowk, Dwarka, Delhi Cantt and the IGI Airport recorded brief spells of light rainfall.

While not heavy enough to cause waterlogging, the drizzle added to the cold and reduced visibility in fog-prone zones.

Rain Extends Across NCR Cities

Showers in Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad

Rain was not limited to Delhi alone. Several NCR cities also experienced rainfall, including Indirapuram, Noida, Greater Noida, Dadri, Chhapraula, Gurugram and Faridabad.

Commuters in these areas reported wet roads, foggy conditions and slower traffic movement during early hours.

Wider Impact Across Haryana and Rajasthan

Light rain was also predicted and observed in regions such as Manesar, Ballabhgarh, Sohna, Palwal and Tizara. Other nearby towns including Bahadurgarh, Karnal, Panipat, Gohana, Rohtak, Rewari, Nandgaon, Khairthal and Kotputli were expected to receive rainfall within a short window.

This widespread weather activity points to an active western disturbance influencing the region.

Delhi Shivers as Temperatures Hit Seasonal Lows

Coldest Day of the Season So Far

Thursday marked the coldest day of the season in Delhi, with the minimum temperature dropping to 5.8 degrees Celsius. The sharp chill was felt throughout the day, as maximum temperatures also remained below normal across the city.

The cold conditions were compounded by high moisture levels and fog, making the air feel colder than recorded temperatures.

Palam Records Lowest Temperature

Among all weather monitoring stations, Palam emerged as the coldest, recording a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius. The Ridge and Ayanagar stations both reported lows of 5.8 degrees Celsius.

The Safdarjung observatory, considered Delhi’s base weather station, also recorded a minimum temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius, which was more than one degree below the seasonal average.

Daytime Temperatures Remain Below Normal

Maximum Temperature Fails to Rise

Despite some sunshine during the day, Delhi’s maximum temperature settled at 17.5 degrees Celsius, about 1.5 degrees below normal for this time of year.

Palam once again stood out, recording the lowest maximum temperature at 14.5 degrees Celsius, which is over four degrees below average. This indicates that cold conditions are not limited to mornings and nights but persist throughout the day.

Cold Wave Conditions Likely to Continue

More Chilly Days Ahead

Weather officials have warned that the cold wave is likely to persist through the week. While a marginal rise in maximum temperatures is expected from Friday onwards, it may not be enough to bring significant relief.

Night temperatures are expected to remain low, keeping mornings and evenings particularly cold.

Fog to Remain a Major Concern

Till January 14, Delhi-NCR is likely to witness clear skies during the day but shallow to moderate fog during early morning hours. This could affect road, rail and flight operations, especially in the northern parts of the region.

Drivers have been advised to remain cautious, use fog lights and maintain safe distances on highways and city roads.

How Residents Are Coping With the Cold

Winter Gear and Delayed Mornings

The combination of rain, fog and cold wave has pushed residents to rely heavily on winter clothing, heaters and hot beverages. Many schools and offices have seen delayed attendance as people struggle with cold mornings.

Homeless shelters across the city have also reported increased footfall, with authorities urging vulnerable populations to seek shelter during extreme cold.

Health Experts Advise Caution

Doctors have advised people, especially children and the elderly, to take precautions against cold-related illnesses. Sudden temperature drops, damp weather and pollution can worsen respiratory conditions, joint pain and viral infections.

Staying warm, avoiding early morning exposure, and maintaining hydration are among the key recommendations.

The surprise rain in Delhi-NCR has added a new layer to an already harsh winter, intensifying cold wave conditions and pushing temperatures further down. While the showers may offer brief relief from air pollution, they also bring challenges in the form of colder days, foggy mornings and increased health risks.

With weather officials predicting continued cold conditions in the days ahead, residents are advised to stay alert, follow safety guidelines and prepare for a prolonged winter chill.
