Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced that October 27, Monday, will be a government holiday in the capital on the occasion of Chhath Puja. The decision covers the third day of the four-day festival, considered the most significant, when devotees offer prayers to the sun.
Chhath Puja: A Celebration of Faith and Nature
Speaking on the occasion, CM Gupta extended her greetings to devotees, emphasizing that Chhath Puja is a festival that reflects faith, devotion, and harmony between humans and nature.
“Through the worship of the sun and Chhathi Maiya, Chhath conveys a message of purity, environmental protection, and gratitude towards nature,” she said.
Government Prepares 1,300+ Ghats Across Delhi
The CM highlighted that the Delhi government has made extensive arrangements for cleanliness, safety, and essential facilities at over 1,300 Chhath ghats across the city. “Every effort is being made so that devotees can perform rituals peacefully and comfortably,” she added.
Accompanied by MLA Sandeep Sahrawat and members of the Chhath Puja Committee, Gupta inspected preparations at the Pochanpur Chhath Ghat in Dwarka Sector 23B.
17 Model Ghats to Enhance Devotee Experience
This year, 17 “model” Chhath ghats are being developed along the Yamuna banks with improved facilities, including tents, lighting, toilets, drinking water, and security arrangements.
“By combining devotion with convenience, Delhi will appear truly Chhathmaye this year,” CM Gupta said, noting that this is the first time the government is organizing the festival on such a large scale.
During her inspection, the CM also joined residents and committee members in painting and decorating parts of the ghat, emphasizing that collective participation by citizens and officials strengthens cultural unity.
Focus on Yamuna Cleaning and Infrastructure
Highlighting ongoing efforts to clean the Yamuna, Gupta mentioned that work has been progressing at a “war-footing” for the past eight months, with visible improvements in water quality. She credited coordination with neighboring states Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his support in the initiative.
Earlier in the day, she also inaugurated a newly built Chhath ghat and other development projects worth ₹30 crore in Laxmi Nagar. CM Gupta lauded the Purvanchal community for their contributions, calling them the backbone of Delhi’s growth.
Devotees Encouraged to Celebrate Safely
Authorities are urging citizens to follow safety guidelines while performing rituals, especially near the riverbanks. With improved facilities and government supervision, devotees can focus on the spiritual and cultural aspects of Chhath Puja without concerns for basic amenities.
